I was born and raised in Oyen, Alberta where I attended grades 1 – 12. I continued post secondary education at Medicine Hat College. In 1995, I graduated with distinction from dentistry at the University of Alberta.I have worked in the small towns of Provost and Hanna, Alberta. In addition to owning half of Hanna Dental Clinic, I set up practice in my home town of Oyen in 1997. In 2001, I accepted a position at the High River Dental Centre. In June 2007 I opened Signature Smiles, and enjoyed building lasting relationships within High River and surrounding areas.
Continuing education is an essential aspect of the dental profession. I especially enjoy taking courses in management, occlusion, restorative and cosmetic dentistry, implant surgery and sedation. Supporting local businesses and the community in general is another huge priority to me. It is with great pleasure that I am able to now offer my services to a thriving community like Okotoks.
Here are some fun fact that I thought I would like to share with my patients… I have taken a few Spanish courses, that I would like to do more of so that I can become fluent. I grew up on a farm, had a pet calf, and learned to drive when I was 12 years old. While I had my practice in Hanna, Alberta I did dental work on Nickleback members. Oh, and I cannot live without chocolate and popcorn… Yum!

Dr. Richard Palmer is a native of Alberta who has been practicing dentistry in Calgary for the past 20 years. He received both B.Sc. and D.D.S. degrees from the University of Alberta and also received a degree in medicine from the University of Calgary. As a general dentist he focuses his treatment to primarily endodontic (root canal) treatments.
While putting himself through school, Dr. Palmer worked as a garbage man and as a ‘jug hound’ for a seismic company that worked in the high arctic.
He has a passion for cooking and finding new recipes which he shares with his lovely and devoted wife and the greatest of his accomplishments – his five wonderful children.
Dr. Barter was born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador where Canadian charm runs amuck and which explains his magnetism and lust for life! Dr. Barter will make you feel at home in the dental chair and will take the time to answer any questions about the most complex procedure in terms that everyone can understand.
Dr. Barter served in the Canadian Armed Forces until 2010, acting as Dental Detachment Commander and Senior Dental Officer for Europe during his time with the military. The two year AEGD program provided him with advanced training in all specialty fields of dentistry, with an emphasis on surgical procedures.
Sharing knowledge is one of Dr. Barter’s joys. He was a clinical instructor at the University of Alberta from 2007 to 2010, supervising fourth year dental students in comprehensive dental care scenarios and acting as a clinical instructor for the IV sedation course as well.
Dr. Barter limits his practice to surgical procedures at Oasis Family Dental Centre.
His wife, Jill, is a dentist too and they have three wonderful children that keep them busy with extracurricular activities. Taxi!
Meet Dr. Sameer Syed, a dentist who’s never, ever had a cavity.
But, don’t let that intimidate you; It’s not simply because he’s so passionate about dental hygiene. He readily admits there’s a little bit of luck involved in his dental dominance.
“I inherited some good genes!”
That’s right, developing a cavity now and then shouldn’t get you down. There’s a little more to it than just dedication to tooth greatness. But, of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep brushing and flossing for optimum periodontal health!
Boyhood trips to the dentist sparked Dr. Syed’s love of dentistry. Yes, you read that right — Dr. Syed enjoys going to the dentist. The office was clean, it smelled good, and dental technology really impressed him.
“They were always really nice to me, too. All these things were positives to me, seeing what dentistry was all about. That played a big role in me wanting to become a dentist.”
Dr. Syed is a real knockout, too. No, we don’t mean like that! He’s focused his dental career on sedation. Dr. Syed cares for some of the most anxious patients that come to the office.
“I really want to get them to a place where they’re comfortable, so they actually look forward to coming, like I did. “That’s really gratifying.”
An arsenal of items are unleashed at his hands to ease anxiety, from medication, nitrous oxide, IV sedation, and a soothing, calm voice. As well, he’s a super nice guy!
Dr. Syed graduated from a Buffalo, New York, dental school in 2004 and shortly after started practicing in Red Deer. In 2013, he headed north. He’d never been to Leduc, but quickly fell for it and the clinic he works at now. He could have taken an Edmonton position, but Leduc is just that awesome!
“You become part of the community. You care about it. They support you, and you want to give back. It’s more than a job, for sure.”
Recently, he’s taken up cycling, spending a lot of time in Edmonton’s river valley and he’s an avid ball hockey player.
Healthy body, healthy mind!
